I USA er 1 av 250 fødsler tvillingfødsler. Og selv om mange foreldre er overlykkelige over å få vite at de skal ønske to barn velkommen til verden samtidig, kan tvillingsvangerskap være forbundet med risiko. Fra tvillingbæring til de smertefulle øyeblikkene på fødestuen holder leger og sykepleiere pusten i påvente av en vellykket fødsel. I de fleste tilfeller går fødselen uten problemer. I andre tilfeller står legene overfor vanskelige avgjørelser som påvirker livet til foreldrene og tvillingene. Det var akkurat det som skjedde da legene la merke til noe uvanlig ved tvillingene til Joy og Roberto, og de måtte ta et valg mellom å operere der og da eller vente til tvillingene var eldre før de forsøkte seg på en farlig operasjon.

De ønsket å se for seg at barna deres skulle leve sine beste liv og være lykkelige og friske i flere tiår fremover. De ville ikke tenke på at deres svake og kjempende kropper skulle opereres under narkose og i sykehusets skarpe lys.
Derfor ønsket en del av dem å utsette operasjonen så lenge som mulig for å unngå risikoen for å miste dem i prosessen. De ville bare ikke miste dem.
Nyt de små øyeblikkene i livet
Til slutt bestemte paret seg for å bestille operasjon noen måneder frem i tid. De visste at de trengte litt lys i enden av tunnelen, og de visste at de ikke kunne utsette det i all evighet. Så de trillet tommeltotter og håpet bare at de ville slå oddsen og få med seg tvillingene sine hjem etter denne prøvelsen. De hadde tross alt satt sitt håp til de beste menneskene.
Det perfekte teamet
Joy og Roberto ønsket ikke å legge døtrenes liv i hendene på folk de ikke stolte på. I løpet av de neste månedene var Joy og Roberto splittet. På den ene siden ønsket de å sørge over datteren de hadde mistet. På den andre siden ønsket de å feire datteren som hadde overlevd. Til slutt bestemte de seg for å fortsette for Amandas skyld og gjøre alt de kunne for å gjøre livet hennes så innholdsrikt og morsomt som overhodet mulig.
Det var også en lettelse for foreldrene å få vite at operasjonen ikke ville gi Amanda varige mén. Etter en rekke kontroller hos legen ble hun friskmeldt som en frisk og glad liten jente.
Forteller sin historie
Etter hvert som Amanda blir eldre, vil hun uten tvil begynne å spørre om arret på siden av kroppen og søsteren sin. Og både Joy og Roberto har bestemt seg for å fortelle henne alt. De vil fortelle Emilys historie og dele arven hennes med tvillingsøsteren, og forhåpentligvis opprettholde den forbindelsen som jentene en gang hadde med hverandre. For dem er dette noe av det viktigste fremover.
Og selv om de aldri helt vil komme seg over tapet av Emily, er det ingen tvil om at familien nå kan gå videre med en av de babyene de alltid har ønsket seg.
